Screen Studio lifetime license and cheaper options

Screen Studio stopped selling its one-time license in October 2025. What changed, what owners keep, the yearly math, and cheaper one-time alternatives.

For years, one of the nice things about Screen Studio was that you could buy it once. That ended on 1 October 2025. If you're searching for a Screen Studio lifetime license today, you won't find one on the official site, and any "lifetime deal" offered elsewhere is not from the developer.

This article explains what changed, what people who already own a license keep, what Screen Studio costs now over a few years, and which tools still sell a one-time license. Prices are as of October 2026; follow the links to check current pricing before you buy.

What changed on 1 October 2025

Screen Studio removed its non-subscription licensing options for new customers on 1 October 2025. Before that, you could buy a one-time license that included a year of updates. Its price rose over time: early buyers paid around $89, and the last price was $229.

Since then, Screen Studio is subscription only:

Plan Price
Monthly $29 per month
Yearly $108 per year ($9 per month, billed yearly)
Education 40% off, on request

Every plan includes every feature. The app opens and records for free, but exporting a video requires a subscription. The terms of service state that fees are non-refundable; you can cancel at any time, and access runs until the end of the period you paid for.

Founder Adam Pietrasiak has said the $229 tier "was a mistake" with low adoption. Some users were unhappy with the switch and called it misleading, as the comments on AlternativeTo's coverage show. From the developer's side, a subscription pays for the cloud features Screen Studio now includes, such as share links, cloud transcription and project sharing.

What existing license owners keep

If you bought a one-time license before the change, you don't lose it. According to the same announcement:

  • You can keep using the version you own indefinitely.
  • You get updates until 25 September 2027.
  • You can still buy renewals to extend updates.

So if you already own a license and you're happy with it, nothing forces you to switch today. The question becomes what to do in late 2027, or what to buy if you're new.

The math: subscription versus one-time

Here is what Screen Studio costs over time, compared with the old one-time price.

Period Monthly plan Yearly plan Old one-time license
1 year $348 $108 $229 (one year of updates)
2 years $696 $216 $229, no updates after year one
3 years $1,044 $324 $229, no updates after year one

If you record demos every week, $108 a year for a well-made tool is reasonable, and the yearly plan is clearly the one to pick. If you record a demo every month or two, it's harder to justify. One Hacker News user said they used Screen Studio "maybe 2-3 times over the course of 3 months", which is the kind of usage where a subscription stings.

Cheaper options that still sell a one-time license

These tools zoom on clicks in the Screen Studio style and can be bought once, or are free. They are not identical to Screen Studio; the caveats matter.

Tool One-time price Platforms Caveats
Dolly Free, or Lifetime €99 once (€49 for the first 500 founders) Mac (Apple silicon) Young app; hosted links beyond Free's 10 are part of Pro; Windows in the works
CleanShot X $35 once Mac Includes one year of updates, then $19 per year; Studio Mode is new
Cap $58 once (Desktop License) Mac, Windows, Linux Free for personal use; the license is needed for commercial use
Screen Charm $99 lifetime Mac macOS 14 or later recommended; small player
FocuSee $199.99 lifetime (Advanced) Mac, Windows Lifetime covers the current major version; AI uses credits
OpenScreen Free, open source Mac, Windows, Linux Original repository archived; check the community fork

A few notes on reading this table:

  • "Lifetime" means different things. CleanShot X includes a year of updates, then you keep the version you have or renew. FocuSee's lifetime license is tied to a major version. Dolly's Lifetime includes all future updates. Read the small print for whichever you pick.
  • Commercial use. Cap's free plan is for personal use; work videos need the paid license.
  • Cloud features cost money for everyone. One-time licenses usually come without hosted share links, or with a small allowance. If you rely on Screen Studio's share links, comments and view counts, factor in another way to host videos.

What you give up by leaving Screen Studio

To be fair to Screen Studio, it is a mature, very well made app, and its 4.0 release in October 2026 added a lot. Things you may miss in cheaper tools:

  • Share links with comments and view counts.
  • iPhone and iPad recording in a device frame.
  • Camera cutout with background removal, face tracking and color grading for the camera.
  • An AI upscaler that keeps text sharp when zoomed.
  • Polish everywhere. Motion, defaults and small details that come from years of iteration.

If several of these are central to your work, the subscription may well be worth it. If what you need is the core effect (auto zoom, a smooth cursor and a nice frame, exported as an MP4), you can get that for far less.

Where Dolly fits

Dolly is our app, so weigh this accordingly. We built it for people who want the Screen Studio look without being forced into a subscription. It records on your Mac with the cursor captured separately, zooms automatically on clicks, redraws the cursor smoothly, and puts everything on a background with padding, corners and shadow. It also does captions and transcript editing on your Mac, camera layouts, masks, crop, device frames, and GIF and MP4 export up to 4K at 60 fps. Everything runs locally, without an account.

  • Free: unlimited recording with no time limit, the full editor including Auto edit, export up to 1080p with a small Made with Dolly logo in the corner, unlimited Quick Share and up to 10 active Dolly links.
  • Pro, €9.99 a month or €59 a year: no logo, 4K at 60 fps, GIF, unlimited Dolly links with stats, password and expiry, your own button and branding, and Connect your AI, so Claude or Cursor can record and edit demos for you.
  • Lifetime, €99 once (€49 for the first 500 founders): everything that runs on your Mac, forever: no logo, 4K at 60 fps, GIF, Connect your AI and every future update. Hosted links beyond Free's 10 stay part of Pro.

Why Free can be that generous is explained in why Dolly's free plan is this generous: recording, editing and export need no servers, because they happen on your Mac. Share links (Dolly links) are new, and Dolly is Mac only for now. For a feature-by-feature look, see Dolly vs Screen Studio.

The bottom line

  • You own an old license: keep using it. Updates run until 25 September 2027.
  • You record every week and use share links: Screen Studio's yearly plan at $108 is fair value.
  • You record now and then, and want to pay once: Dolly, CleanShot X, Cap or Screen Charm, depending on platform and features.
  • You want free: Cap for personal use, OpenScreen's fork, or Dolly's free tier.
