A screen recorder for YouTube videos that read on every screen.

Walkthroughs, reviews and tutorials, recorded on your Mac with your face and voice. Dolly handles the zooms and the cursor, so you talk instead of keyframing.

What's the best way to screen record a YouTube video on a Mac?

Use a screen recorder that records your camera and microphone with the screen and zooms in for you. In Dolly, record each section as its own take, let auto zoom keep small UI readable, cut silences and filler words, then export a 16:9 MP4 in 4K at 60 fps with Lifetime (€5 once), or 1440p on Free, plus an SRT caption file for YouTube Studio.

Who it’s for: YouTubers and educators making software tutorials, app reviews and walkthroughs, from short videos to long-form.

Say hello.

  2. Record in sectionsRecord each chapter as its own take. Dolly puts several recordings on one timeline.
  3. Clean the editFind silences, remove filler words from the transcript, speed up typing and add a quiet music bed.
  4. Export 4K and an SRT16:9, 4K, 60 fps, Studio quality. Export the captions as .srt and upload them in YouTube Studio.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Uploading 1080p when text matters. YouTube streams higher-resolution uploads at a higher bitrate, so 1440p or 4K looks sharper even on a 1080p screen.
  • A camera bubble over the UI. Switch that clip to screen only for detailed parts.
  • One long take. Separate takes per section are easier to fix and reorder.
  • Leaving in every pause. Find silences does the first cut in one click.

Dolly or a recorder plus an editor

A common YouTube setup is OBS or QuickTime to record, then Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Camtasia for zooms and cuts. That gives full control, but every zoom is placed by hand. Dolly does the zooms, cursor and camera layout from the recording itself and keeps a light timeline for cuts. For B-roll, multicam or color grading, export from Dolly and finish in your editor.

Your face, when it helps

A camera bubble builds trust in intros and outros; in the detailed parts the screen should win. In Dolly the camera layout can change per clip, and it animates between layouts. For YouTube chapters, let Dolly suggest a title, summary and chapters from what you said (Captions › Title & chapters, on your Mac), check them, and paste the “0:00 Intro” lines into your description. YouTube videos: questions

What screen recorder is best for YouTube tutorials on Mac?

One that keeps text readable and records your camera and mic in the same take. Dolly records at 60 fps, zooms on clicks automatically and exports 4K with Lifetime, €5 once.

Should I upload screen recordings to YouTube in 4K?

If text matters, yes. YouTube streams higher-resolution uploads at a higher bitrate, so a 4K or 1440p upload looks crisper than a 1080p one, even on a 1080p screen.

Can I upload captions from Dolly to YouTube?

Yes. Export the captions as an .srt file and upload it under Subtitles in YouTube Studio.

Is there a time limit on recordings?

No. Every plan, including Free, records with no time limit. Dolly stops safely if your disk is nearly full.

Can I show my face in a screen recording?

Yes. Choose a camera bubble, side by side or camera only, and change the layout per clip; Dolly animates between layouts.
