Best Screen Studio alternatives in 2026

Screen Studio alternatives in 2026: Cap, CleanShot X, FocuSee, Screen Charm, Tella, Loom, OpenScreen and Dolly, with prices and who each suits.

Screen Studio set the standard for polished Mac screen recordings: you record normally, and the app adds smooth zooms, a cleaned-up cursor and a nice background afterwards. It is still a very good product, and version 4.0 shipped on 5 October 2026 with transcript editing, a camera cutout and faster exports. Even so, plenty of people go looking for alternatives. Usually it's about price, platform or what they actually need. This guide covers the main options, what each one does well and who it suits. Prices are as of October 2026 and link to the vendor's own page. Check them before you buy, because they change often.

Why people look for an alternative

Three reasons come up again and again.

If none of these apply to you, Screen Studio is a safe choice. The rest of this article is for everyone else.

What to compare

Before looking at products, decide what matters to you. These are the questions that actually separate the tools:

  1. Does it zoom automatically on clicks? This is the core "Screen Studio effect". Most tools below do it now, but the quality of the motion varies.
  2. Is the cursor recorded separately? Tools that capture the cursor as data can smooth it, resize it or change its style after recording. Tools that bake it into the video can't.
  3. How do you pay? Monthly, yearly, one-time, or free and open source.
  4. Which platforms? Mac only, Mac and Windows, or also Linux and the browser.
  5. Where does it go after export? An MP4 on your disk, or a hosted link with comments and view counts.

The alternatives

Cap

Cap is an open-source recorder that started as a Loom alternative and added a "Studio Mode" with a full editor. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux and can be self-hosted.

  • Price: Free for personal use, with Studio Mode, 4K/60 fps export and share links up to 5 minutes. A Desktop License for commercial use costs $29 per year or $58 once. Cap Pro is $12 per user per month, or $8.16 per month billed yearly.
  • Good for: People who want both instant share links and a polished editor, teams that need Windows or Linux, and anyone who prefers open source.
  • Keep in mind: The free plan excludes commercial use, so most work use needs a paid license.

CleanShot X

CleanShot X is a popular Mac screenshot app that also records. Version 5.0 added a Studio Mode with smart zooms that follow the cursor, cursor smoothing, motion blur and custom backgrounds.

  • Price: $35 once, including a year of updates, then an optional $19 per year for further updates. CleanShot Pro (cloud) is $10 per user per month billed yearly. It is also available through Setapp.
  • Good for: People who already use CleanShot for screenshots and want decent polished recordings in the same app.
  • Keep in mind: Studio Mode is new, and recording is one feature among many rather than the whole product.

FocuSee

FocuSee from iMobie is built for product demos and tutorials. Its site says auto zoom "follows clicks and typing sections", and it generates subtitles and adapts recordings for social formats.

  • Price: Standard is $19.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Advanced is $24.99 per month, $79.99 per year, or $199.99 lifetime. Yearly and lifetime plans have a 60-day money-back guarantee, minus any AI credits used.
  • Good for: Mac and Windows users who want auto zoom plus built-in captions and vertical formats.
  • Keep in mind: The pricing page shows large "original" prices next to the discounted ones. Judge it by what you actually pay.

Screen Charm

Screen Charm is a Mac-only recorder with automatic zooms after each click, plus captions generated from your narration.

  • Price: $19 per month or $99 lifetime, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
  • Good for: Mac users who want a one-time purchase in the Screen Studio style.
  • Keep in mind: Mac only, and the site lists macOS Sonoma 14.0 as the recommended version.

Tella

Tella works in the browser and also has native apps for Mac and Windows. It's built around recording in clips, editing them together and sharing a link. It adds layouts, backgrounds, zoom effects and subtitles.

  • Price: Pro is $13 per user per month and Premium $19 per user per month, both billed yearly. Enterprise is custom. Removing Tella branding and 60 fps export are Premium features.
  • Good for: Creators and teams who present on camera, record in segments and share by link.
  • Keep in mind: It's a subscription per user. If you only need local MP4 files, you pay for hosting you may not use.

Loom

Loom (owned by Atlassian) is the default for quick async video at work: record, get a link, move on.

  • Price: The Starter plan is free, with 25 videos, 5 minutes per screen recording, up to 720p and a Loom watermark. Business is $18 per user per month, and Business + AI is $24.
  • Good for: Quick explanations to colleagues, bug reports and feedback, where speed matters more than polish.
  • Keep in mind: Loom is a different kind of tool. It isn't built around auto zoom or styled backgrounds, so it doesn't replace Screen Studio for marketing demos.

OpenScreen

OpenScreen is a free, MIT-licensed Screen Studio alternative for macOS, Windows and Linux, with about 39.9k GitHub stars. It offers auto and manual zooms, cursor effects, webcam overlay, captions and MP4 or GIF export.

  • Price: Free, with no paid tiers.
  • Good for: People who want a free tool and are comfortable with open-source software.
  • Keep in mind: At the time of writing, the repository is archived and no longer maintained, with a community spin-off linked from it. Check that fork's status before you rely on it.

Dolly

Dolly is our app, so weigh this entry with that in mind. It's a Mac recorder (Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later) that does the core Screen Studio workflow. It records a display or window with the cursor captured separately, then redraws it smoothly. It zooms automatically on clicks, and the zooms are editable blocks on the timeline. It adds backgrounds, padding, rounded corners and shadow, and exports MP4 or GIF. Since version 0.3 it also has camera layouts, captions and transcript editing on your Mac, blur and highlight masks, crop and device frames. Everything runs locally with no account.

  • Price: A free version with no time limit that exports up to 1080p with a small Made with Dolly logo in the corner. Pro is €9.99 a month or €59 a year: no logo, 4K, GIF, unlimited Dolly links, and AI tools like Claude or Cursor can record and edit demos for you. Lifetime is €99 once for everything that runs on your Mac.
  • Good for: Mac users who want the polished look for free, with no time limit. See what the free screen recorder includes.
  • More: Dolly vs Screen Studio, feature by feature and why people switch.
  • Keep in mind: It's a young app. Since this was first written, captions, transcript editing, camera layouts, GIF export, a teleprompter, drawing while you record, vertical videos that follow the action and share links (Dolly links: 10 active links on Free, unlimited on Pro) have shipped, and iPhone recording is coming soon; Windows is on the roadmap but not shipped. If you need it now, one of the tools above is a better fit.

How to choose

  • You record often, need captions, camera layouts and share links, and the budget is fine: stay with Screen Studio, or try Tella if you work in a team.
  • You need Windows or Linux: Cap, FocuSee or Tella.
  • You want to pay once: CleanShot X, Screen Charm, Cap's Desktop License, FocuSee Lifetime, or Dolly.
  • You mostly send quick videos to colleagues: Loom or Cap's instant mode.
  • You want free and open source: Cap for personal use, or OpenScreen if you're willing to follow a community fork.

Most of these tools have a free version or a refund window. The best test is simple: record the same 60-second demo in two or three of them and compare the exported files side by side. Watch how the zooms move, whether the cursor looks natural, and how long the export takes.
