Record

Recording options

Displays, windows, areas, pauses and countdowns.

Sources

Display records a whole screen. Window records one app window. Area records a rectangle you draw (at least 150 × 150 points). Dolly records at 60 fps at your screen's full Retina resolution. Recording an iPhone or iPad is coming soon: see Record an iPhone or iPad.

While recording

The floating pill shows the timer and lets you pause and resume, restart the take, cancel, or stop. The menu bar shows a red dot with the time; click it for the same controls. Press ⇧⌘D to draw on screen.

Countdown and sounds

Choose a countdown of 3, 5 or 10 seconds, or none, and switch the start and stop sounds on or off. ⇧⌘2 during the countdown cancels it.

Several takes

Click + in the editor to add another recording to the same project. Takes play one after the other on one timeline.

Pick a window by clicking it

Choose Window (or press 2) and every window on your screens lights up as you point at it, with its app, title and size. Click the one you want and the countdown starts; Enter takes the highlighted one, Esc cancels. Only ordinary app windows are offered, never Dolly's own. The list of windows on the tile still works too.

The same area again

Choose Area and the last area on that display is already selected, so recording the same part of the screen is Record and Enter. Drag inside the frame to move it, or outside it for a new one.

Keys in the recording bar

While the bar is up: 1 2 3 pick Display, Window and Area, C the camera, M the microphone, A system audio, and Enter records. More (⋯) holds the Script, the recordings folder and Settings.

Your last look

A new recording starts with the background, padding, corners, shadow, frame, cursor and animation of the project you edited last, so you pick your look once. A default preset (★ in Presets) wins over that.
